This blog is where I write about things I tend to feel I can’t talk to the people around me about. November 2009 I stumbled upon a set of blogs that has changed a lot of how I view the world. I’d already been getting yelled at in class for questioning the feminist teachings I was being taught in college. I’m still suronded by people who would be deeply concerned if they learned what I’ve been reading so, here I have my internet alter-ego where I can muse about my changing views of the world. I read more than I comment, but will work on that, and am always interested in hearing from people.

Out of curiosity – can you site some feminist teachings in particular that you questioned?
When I took sociology 101, I kept saying to myself, “Man, that CANNOT be right”. But I never said anything out loud…
I’ll see if I can find the exact article. The one that I did have people yelling at me about was that science was inherently sexist because more men were getting PhDs, and didn’t like the isolated work that most lab science leads to. So it was the duty of the schools and institutions to change how science is taught and dealt with. Women needed to be half of the people participating. While reading it for the class (Development of Anthropological Theory) I threw the article across the room twice. It also defined feminism theory as 1. Gender plays a role in your interaction with society 2. Women are intrinsically disadvantaged.
I said that if you assumed how a society worked going in then you would miss how it actually worked. I read in my theory book an article that argued just that.
I also said that science tries to eliminate the person so, while not perfect (I’ve studied a lot of history of science), it shouldn’t matter. That is when the screaming started.
Some of the other things involve how government funding works for child care, I disagree with a lot of feminist view points on this. Sports is a big one, I don’t think that women’s sports should have as much attention/funding if people aren’t watching them. That is the capitalist in me. The promotion of boys acting feminine and the amount of praise I got for being a math major. If gender shouldn’t matter, why should I support a candidate just because she is female. That sort of thing
I was not actually referring to an actual article…
I was thinking of things like:
“The only reason women wear make-up is to cover bruises from their naturally violent male partners”.
“The reason any man would ask a woman to shave her V spot is because he wants to fantasize about having sex with a child”.
“By the age of 30, 80% of men have fantasized about having sex with a child”.
“Men commit 99% of all domestic violence”.
“Men are 10 times more likely to rape than women are to falsely accuse of rape”.
You know – things like that – these are all things I heard in Sociology 101.n
…. That is just wrong. Provably wrong. And sexist. I’m sad that that is taught.
